Absolute Poker Finally Gets Closure

Jan 29th 2008
Upon the "superuser" account cheating scandal and the audit conducted by Australian firm Gaming Associates at the request of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, Absolute Poker finally gets some kind of closure. Indeed, the result it is not a pretty happy one, as Absolute Poker has to pay a $500,000 fine, but they are happy to have things sort out in the end.

The inspection run at Absolute Poker revealed they had seven accounts which were used to “compromise Absolute Poker's systems by participating in live poker games with players using software that enable the viewing of the 'hole cards' of each of the other players, resulting in unfair play."

The first accusations that Absolute Poker had poker players cheating in live poker game, floated up last October. Players on TwoPlusTwo.com forums were debating the case of the "Potripper" player who got suspected after he went on an unbelievable winning spree that included a 20-minute stretch where he never folded a hand before the flop.

Then, one of the players wanted to check his suspicions and asked for a complete hand history from Absolute Poker. They sent him an e-mail which proved to have contained much more than the hand history. He received info about hole cards for every player, IP addresses and the user details of everyone either playing at or watching the table.

After the file sent was studied by him an other experienced poker player, they concluded that the odds for another player being able to see the hole cards of everyone. This is when Absolute Poker started to get pressed for explanations.

At first, the online poker room denied the possibility of a cheating situations but later reversed course and paid any player that had lost money to the accounts in questions.

Now, after the audit is over, the Kahnawake Gaming Commission declared that Absolute Poker indeed had fixed the software but they required them to place a "security deposit" with the Commission in case it needed to investigate them again.
