Secret gambling deal
By Daniel Michaels, Mar 26th 2007Pubs negotiated a secret deal with the Iemma Government to install more poker machines in their profitable gaming rooms. They would also like multiplayer electronic roulette and blackjack tables, famous games now restricted to registered clubs. Their addition would be a jackpot for pubs, with 10 bettors gambling up to $100 each and new interesting games every few minutes.
After supporting with almost $2 million the Labor's re-election, the hotel and club industries hope to obtain a reevaluation of the Government's poker machine policy if Labor is re-elected. It will center on how to distribute 2700 poker machine licenses that have been surrendered to the Government by clubs and pubs over the past 4 years.
John Thorpe, the Australian Hotels Association president, sustained that his institute had long argued for collective authorizations to be allocated to pubs in the economically weak regions of NSW. However he denied any deal with the Labor Government, arguing that the subject would be on the industry's plan once the election is over.
