Casino Poker Etiquette

Good manners should be principal at the table but regrettably it is every so often when you observe that courtesy is missing. Below you will find a few tips which will carry out you with courtesy in the game.

Try to control your language. I am referring to the swearing habit that many players unfortunately have it. Pretend that youre at a family holiday with grandma, grandpa, and all the little kids sitting round the table.

Keep your emotions under control. Don't take your emotions out on someone who is only doing his job or someone you are competing against. If you do lose please don't abuse the dealers. It's not their fault if Lady Luck decided to abandon you. They are only the messengers. Please, "Don't Shoot the Messenger!" because the only person responsible for your winnings or losses is you.

Be considerate of the rest of the table and don't antagonize anyone on purpose.

It's not fun for the other players when they have to wait forever for you to make a decision.

Do not pass your cards out of turn, even if you are no longer interested in staying in contest for the pot. It can affect the fortunes of one player over another when the field is shortened and a player has a difficult decision to make. It usually gives an advantage to the players seated beside you who have yet to make their plays. You may see other players fold, or call out of turn, but please don't do it yourself. If you do, be assured you will be pulled up by the other players for it.

When discarding your hand, do so at a low level of flight so that no other player can see what you have discarded. Showing your cards, except at the showdown, even without bad intent is bad etiquette.

Don't immediately throw in your cards if someone calls out a better hand. The dealer will declare the winner of the hand. If you missed a better hand than you thought you had you might just be the winner.

Leave your cards in plain view at all time, preferably on the table in front of you. Holding them against your shirt or showing them to "railbird" friends (See Glossary) is not approved behavior.

You should always keep your chips in plain view at all times. Throwing your chips into the current pot is rude because it makes it hard for people to see what your bet is. Stack neatly and be considerate.

Refrain from criticizing other player's methods standard of play. It's not appropriate to make remarks about possible hands being played whether you're in the game or not. This can reveal information to other players and give them an inequitable advantage or disadvantage.

Refrain from a betting action like folding your hand, until the action comes to you. This gives information to people before their turn to act.

Forget postmortems. It is irritating for other players to have to listen to discussion on what happened in the last hand, or even several hands before.

Likewise, please don't feel that you have to tell everyone what your last hand was and what you would have bet if only you had stayed in the pot, some polite people might simulate interest, but few really are.

Do not handle other player's chips or cards.

Players should speak up and assist the dealer by calling attention to an error in the amount of the bet or the improper reading of the hand etc. Likewise, any player who sees as error about to be made, such as awarding the pot to the wrong person, has a duty to speak up.
