Texas Hold'em is one of the most interesting, exciting and captivating poker games, testimony the large number of players, tournaments and publicity it receives. In this article we will explain you all the rules of the game, what makes the online slots game different than any other poker games, and all the details that you need to know. We assure you that once you will finish reading this article, you will be most certain ready to play texas hold em.

The game is usually played with nine or ten players, the game being considered short handed when fewer players are at the table. Before the actual game can begin, the dealer must be decided. Each player will receive one card, the dealer being represented by the player with the highest valued card. The button, a white plastic chip, indicates the dealer's position. Each player will be the dealer after a round has ended starting from the left of the initial dealer. The button will move in front of that specific dealer as well.

The Pre-Flop:

There are some compulsory bets which need to be placed before the cards are dealt. These bets are called the big blind and the small blind (also called little blind). They are the first bets placed and they are predetermined, the big blind being twice the amount of the small blind. The person located on the dealer's left represents the little blind, and the person located on his left (little blinds' left) represents the big blind.

The pocket cards or hole cards (represented by 2 faced down cards) will be dealt to each player starting with the player from the dealer's left. Starting from the left of the big blind seat each player must decide whether to call the big blind (to match it), to fold (the player won't further participate in the game, he doesn't place any extra bet, but will lose the big blind), or to raise the big blind. If the bet has been raised, the next player must either call the new bet or fold, and so on until the same amount of the bet has been remised by everyone.

After a raise has been placed another raise may occur, being called a re-raise. The players' options in this case are to either check the re-raise (they place the demanded sum) or once again raise the re-raise. One must know that a raise can not be performed by the same player on his previous raise, unless somebody else raises his bet before. When the same bet has been placed by every player or they have all folded the betting round stops.

The Flop:

The dealer will place the flop (three community faced down cards) but only after he has placed aside one card which will not be used in the game. The action is called "burning the card" and is to make the dealing more randomly. The flop is then turned face up simultaneously. The players can combine the flop with the hole cards to make any winning combinations.

The hand ranks are the same as in standard poker. The player on the left of the dealer (little blind position) must make the first move: check, bet or fold. It is a difficult position for this player as he is Under the Gun, UTG, because he does not know what other players may have in hand since he hasn't seen their bet actions.

A raise of the bet is not mandatory in this stage for the UTG player; he can check the previous bet, however most experts recommend a fold in case a hand has not been improved by this stage. This round ends just like the betting round when the same bet has been placed by every player or they have all folded.

The Turn:

The fourth community card, the turn will be dealt face up, again only after a card has been burned. A betting round follows, exactly like in the flop round, the UTG being the player sitting in the small blind seat.

The River:

Another burned card and the final community card, the river, is revealed. The final betting round occurs and if all the players decide to fold, the last one doing so will win the round. He is not obliged to show his hand to the other players; he can muck the cards by throwing them into the discard pile.

The Showdown:

After the river the remaining players which did not fold participate in the showdown. The last person which placed the bet will show his cards first then followed by the rest of the remaining players. If any of the remaining players has a worse hand than the ones revealed he may choose to muck the cards, thus deciding to fold but in this way protecting his strategy. The best five-card poker hand decides the winner. There are more important things in poker beside the rules:

The Player's Position:

The position of the player in a round is very important. Being the dealer will get you the most benefits since you will make the last any betting decisions. You will see how the other players have bet and that is very useful information.

The players from the early positions are the most disadvantaged since they have to make the first bets without knowing how the others will bet. The ones from the middle positions are somewhat neuter. As we have mentioned before being in the late positions brings the most advantages.

The cutoff (player from the right of the dealer) is considered by many more important than the dealer itself since the dealer can be bumped out from the game by the cutoff with big raises. If the cutoff places big amounts of money the dealer might think that he has a very strong hand but it may be just a strategy, and if it succeeds the cutoff will have the final betting decisions.

Ways of winning:

Excepting the case when all the players' fold, the only way to win a hand is by having the best five-card poker hand from the seven cards combined in a showdown. The showdown can produce some interesting outcomes: if the players have maximum valued pair of sevens, and the community cards are: K, K, Q, Q, 10, then the pot will be divided to all the remaining players. If it is a tie the same rule is applied. In case of both players having a flush or a straight, the player with the highest valued card will win.

Various types of Texas Hold'em exist: Limit, Pot Limit, and No Limit. In the Limit version, the amount of the bet is predetermined in most of the times being equal to the amount of the big blind. Usually this version allows 5 raises per round including the big blind and the first raise. At the Pot Limit version, the amount of the raise must be equal to the pot and it can not exceed its value.

The No Limit version is the most spectacular as there is no betting limit. In this case a player can declare 'All In', thus betting all his remaining money, a win or lose situation. A side pot will be created if the player has too few chips. The player can't win the side pot, only the main pot.
